While breast cancer is an issue on every woman’s mind, men rarely think that they are at risk or think about it at all. When it is on their mind it’s usually when they stand tall next to a loved one with the cancer and do everything possible to make their struggle as manageable as possible.

Well in Ohio, a husband and wife are standing tall next to each other as they are both considering treatment options for their breast cancer together.

Barbara Welsh, 63, and her husband Mike Welsh, 62, were both diagnosed with breast cancer in separate instances and are speaking out about it to raise awareness.

Barbra was diagnosed with breast cancer, had surgery in January, went through chemotherapy, and is now starting radiation treatments.

Mike was diagnosed and had surgery in July and is now considering further treatment options which may include chemotherapy and radiation.

Mike first noticed something was wrong when he got in his car and felt discomfort in his breast when he buckled his seat belt across his chest. Talking to his wifes doctor while she was undergoing treatment he asked if it was possible for men to get breast cancer. He was referred to the Compton Center at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, where he found out that he had male breast cancer.

Male breast cancer is rare, with only about 1,900 cases expected to be diagnosed this year, and about 440 men dying from the illness, but is still an issue that needs to be observed.

Mike is speaking out about his experience to try and raise awareness in hopes that he can educate as many men about this condition as possible.

“If I could help 10 people or 100, that’s a start,” said Welsh, while talking to reporters.

He and his wife joke that she glows from radiation treatment that she has begun.

“I’m going to set her outside for Halloween,” Mike Welsh said.

“You’ve got to laugh at it,” Mike Welsh said. “You have good days, bad days and better days. We’re having fun with it.”

Still in the testing stage, this new form of birth control comes as an injection and lasts for two months. It contains the hormones testosterone and progesterone which make the sperm count in men drastically decrease.

Men have never been very keen on birth control methods like vasectomies for various reasons but the most probably being the idea of “snip, snip” even though it’s a perfectly safe and usually reversible procedure.

This new form of male contraceptive could be the answer men have been waiting for to take over their sexuality and place it in their hands. Not having to worry about pregnancy defiantly has it’s advantages for both men and women hopefully this new form of birth control becomes popular.

It will be years before this new contraceptive hits the market, if ever, so for now if men want to control birth it’s back to condoms.

Looks like mom was right. Eating your veggies will make you grow up big and strong.

Prostate Cancer, a cancer that forms in tissues of the prostate (a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum), affects hundreds of thousands of men. In 2009 alone there were 192,280 new cases and 27,360 deaths.

Well there are things you can do to help prevent prostate cancer. We’ve taken a look at five foods to add to your diet to reduce your risk.

[ad#large-top]
Broccoli which is full of sulphoraphane, a cancer fighting agent that helps rid the body of excess testosterone and reduces the risk of prostate and even other cancers.

As well as broccoli you can also add other cancer fighting veggies such as kale, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower to your list.

a

Tomatoes a delicious fruit, or is it a vegetable? Ahh who cares, because it’s filed with Lycopene an antioxidant that has been proven effective in reducing the development of certain cancers including prostate cancer.

With tomatoes it’s best to heat them in order to release as much Lycopene as possible.

a

Garlic this aromatic tasty cancer fighting food is one of the most potent anti-cancer foods out there. So rule of thumb-the more the better (contrary as to what people in close proximity may say).

Cook it, pickle it, roast it and consume it!

a

Soy once called the food of the future is here now and can help protect you from prostate cancer. In a March, 15 2008 study published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research it was found that in laberatory mice soybeans almost completely prevented the spread of human prostate cancer.

So go soy! Soy beans come in many, many forms so there is something for everyone. You can put soy milk in your morning coffee or cereal, you can toss it in a stir fry with some cancer fighting broccoli and make a stir fry, or you can even just munch on soy nuts. There is no end to how much of this wonder full bean you can consume daily to give your body that edge in fighting an extremely common male cancer.

Berries packed full of antioxidant anthocyanins, vitamins, and minerals berries make not only a great snack or topping for your crape but help in the fight against colon cancer. Black raspberries being the best beneficial berry!

a
